UNLOCKED/RECONNECTED June 4 - July 25, 2020

Unlocked/Reconnected is an initiative by Gallery Dürst Britt & Mayhew and Tegenboschvanvreden that brings together a wide range of 'houses for art': museums, institutes for presentation, galleries, artists' initiatives and corporate collections. The point of departure for Unlocked/Reconnected is the idea of solidarity, the will to reflect collectively on what home is. Our world must not become fragmented, fractured into enclosing walls: a consolidation of forces and locations, national and international, can in fact show us what the house/home can mean. As an initiative Unlocked/Reconnected stems from a sense that opening up the home, in the aftermath of the lockdown, will force us to reconsider our outlook on this. Unlocked/Reconnected underlines the importance of art and culture in this period of global crisis.

Project space Cargo in Context has invited Natascha Libbert to show her work Home.

As our country and our Europe gradually unlocks itself, we look back on a period in which our gaze was specifically focused on our own home and perimeters. During the course of the lockdown, our gaze turned inwards as we came to terms with the conditions of a global pandemic and borders were resurrected. With Home, Natascha Libbert would suggest that for many the concept of home was not and is not, a given.

The main exhibition space of Cargo in Context will show work by artist Remco Torenbosch On Property.

'Cargo’s white cube leent zich uitstekend voor Undermined van Natascha Libbert. Het werk dat je bij binnenkomst het eerste ziet, een soort oplichtende vuurexplosie, maakt de Cargo-ruimte oogverblindend: na het vuur de lieflijk ogende werken in gebroken- tegen het stralende wit van de wanden.

Die lieflijkheid is echter zo bedrieglijk als het maar zijn kan. Het verhult namelijk de essentie van Libbert’s werk. In de ogenschijnlijk onschuldige landschappen maakt zij sporen die mensen er in achterlaten subtiel voelbaar. Voor Undermined deed zij onderzoek naar de uiteenlopende manieren van onze omgang met de aarde. Nu eens toont zij de moedwillige vervuiling ervan, dan weer ervaar je als toeschouwer bijna aan den lijve de ontkenning van klimaatverandering en ecosystemen.

Libbert is in Nederland als kunstenaar opgeleid, maar groeide op in uiteenlopende windstreken. Voor Undermined reisde zij onder meer naar Florida, Spanje en Cyprus. In Florida was zij getuige van moedwillige brandstichting zogenaamd ten gunste van de bodem met alle gevolgen van dien. In Spanje legde zij de verwoestende uitwerking op mens en aarde van de immense voedselkassen vast. In Cyprus tenslotte, stuitte zij op in de steek gelaten mijnen, wat resulteerde in een even oogverblindend als super giftig kleurgamma.

De titel van Undermined is minstens zo dubbelzinnig als dat Libbert haar beelden laat zien: esthetiek met een gevaarlijke zwart randje.'
