When I was 14 we moved to Accra, Ghana. I stayed there for about a year. The first 7 weeks we lived in a hotel called Sanaa Lodge. I remember we ate only 2 things namely avocado and lobster because that was the only thing fresh, not to mention available, from the menu. Eating something for 7 weeks makes wonderful things less wonderful. To this day, I have not really recovered and lobster doesn't float my boat. With the exception of the mini lobster they still serve at the beach in Accra. When I go there now, I always have some for breakfast. While I'm waiting, beautiful things happen.

December 20, 2010. A while ago I came across this post at ACF, a blog maintained by an interesting photography center in Amsterdam. I liked the description, it's a good artist statement written by someone else hence the clarity (in Dutch). These images was part of a duo exhibition at Liefhertje en de Grote Witte Reus.
December 19, 2010. I was going through my archives for images of 'land' and came across a series of water. These were taken in Waterland. There is a lot of water in Waterland.
I am working on an assigment in a zoo. I was asked by the Netherlands Cultural Heritage Agency (Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed) to photograph 'Diergaarde Blijdorp' (a zoo near Rotterdam) which falls under the Heritage Agency. The brief was to use my own style and show the way in which people experienced this particular location. I decided to depict a world rich in fantasy, as zoos are, where make believe and aunthenticity become one. And why not. I have spent several years observing - and critiquing - the blind need for a world of make believe and questionable ideals. On this occasion, I decided that make believe was beautiful too. This thought has continued to appeal to me and has become the focus in new work.

September 15, 2010. Nairobi. I spent a few hours in the home of Joseph and his family. I took in an interest in the pictures hanging on the wall. When I asked why they were all so high, Joseph told me it was so that the children could not reach them.
